Finally moving onto my FMP. Had my eureka moment on what to do. I am creating a book/film about my family life and the surround area of Longbridge. I intend to document every day life on my daily travels.

I dont want any of these photos staged, quick snapshots of things i find interesting.

Here are some double page spreads that i have started, these aren't final as i still have markers to add etc.

As this project is very heavily photography based I have started a collection to try and get as many different cameras as i can.

Trying to use a lot of film photography in this project.

These are some of the cameras i bought, Lomography digitals with expired film in them.

The photos are currently being developed, so i will post some of the outcomes when i get them.

MAGAZINE STYLEGUIDE_

Idea was to create a "perfect" magazine that we would like to produce. As i'd recently went on an urban exploration i decided to put some of the photos to good use and create a sort of photography book/guide.

This is the style guide created. Its made in a way that i could give this styleguide to someone and they could create the magazine for me? if thats the right way of putting it?

Went out and did a spot of urban exploring in my 2 hour break at college, took some photos on a shit digicam so the quality isnt the best. I had a go at doing some editing on the photos and some of them have turned out really nice. So im thinking about making myself a cool little zine.

New brief for photography based on the word homage. Basically we need to go out and photograph something that we pay homage to and portray time in the photos.

I chose industry, so for starters i went and took some photos local to me at the rover factory. These were just initial ideas, I intend to go back out with a half decent camera next time and get the snaps that i need.

FASHION_

A week long brief we got given to film and edit a video based around something related to fashion. We all got paired up in groups with the fashion students to collaborate. At times this was pretty annoying as we all had different ideas and styles that we wanted to use.

In the end we stuck with a military theme. Looking at constructivist and protest art i came up with a limited colour design that replicated that of the protest art.

Mixing the footage we filmed, with real life war footage the group came up with the different scenes which we then merged together.

Here is the final outcome.

FUCK THE 47_

These are spreads from my zine titled "fuck the 47" which basically depicts the hatred towards the bus that i haveto travel on to and from college most days. Tried to go for some simple layouts, using a colour scheme for each day, which came about from those ridiculous name titled socks that you can buy. Overall i think it turned out pretty successful, just want to get it all printed nicely.

IDENT BRIEF_MARK

These are some of the ideas i had for the company idents.

I chose URBAN VINTAGE as my company, a local vintage shop which sells all sorts of retro bits and bobs.

As it is a retro shop i wanted to go with a retro theme, so the series of the short idents were all linked in that way.

First off this is an idea i had that was to use some old 60s lampshades from the shop and record them flickering and turning on and off. I then wanted to make them sound responsive so they would turn on and off to the beat of the music or the sound that i am using.

Another simple idea i had was to either re-create this dial phone in cinema 4D or to take a series of photographs so that it can be stop frame edited. Either way i wanted it to be a really choppy animation or the phone dialling a couple of numbers, so the dial would turn around to the corresponding number, with the actual sound of the dial wheel whirring. Then i wanted it to start ringing but have this really sudden and jolty and have the handle rattle ontop of the phone.

The actual image has a rough cut out white box behind it with will move along with the picture but its there to make it stand out from the background that i will use.

Same sort of idea as the previous but this time using a retro old toy robot from the shop. Again debating whether to have it 3D or images but i want the robot to whiz onto the screen and jolt about all robot like I suppose.

The background will be animated with a groovy sort of pattern, which will wave and flow in the background, inspiration coming from the 60s psychadelic era. These will have duo-toned images from the UV shop masked into them aswell.

All of these ideas when coming to an end will have the background fade to white and the new URBAN VINTAGE logo will apear pretty large on the screen.

Hand renedered reform work. Each piece was created using only 1 drawing or photo from each item. Was trying to see how many things i could come up with using minimal aspects. Some of it has turned out pretty well in my opinion.

URBAN VILLAGE IDENTS_

Got given this brief earlier to create some idents for a "local business" As I am already in contact with the owner of Urban Village I decided to choose them. A few things have been floating around my head and I'm thinking..

I want some really well framed filmed shots of various cool little things from the shop.

1_ Time lapse of the owner Frankie stood in the middle of the shop still looking at the camera, obviously people would be walking past and movement in the background. This would be shot for a while, then sped up and condensed down into the 10 seconds.

2_ Get a framed close up shot from the floor of the bottom back half of one of the Urban Village

scooters. Due to the close frame the only thing i want to show is the feet of the person and then kickstarting the scooter. Would keep the natural sound of the video, dont want to tamper with the scooter sound.

3_ Take a shot of one of the clothes racks and have someone flick

ing through the clothes if thats how you would describe it.

4_ As the shop sells retro goodies i want to do a set of some with some of the old toys that he has, all of them really simple, still framed camera and have the little battery powered toys set off and just let them do their own thing. If they go out the frame, thats going to be the beauty of it. I want it all very realistic and subtle.

5_ There are also alot of different lights and lamps within the shop so i was thinking of doing some that maybe the light was responsive to an audio track or sound that i put on it. Try and film some of these in a darkened room.

I want all these to be very simple videos and then have the tag animate somewhere on the screen (bottom left) really subtly. the tags will all be the same on each of the idents.

The meeting for the live brief got cancelled so i stayed around and starting messing with my reform item in photo shop here are some of the things i came up with.

FLIP_BOOK ANIMATION

We were set to design 30 a4 pages which we are then going to create into a flip book. I wanted to create something hand drawn but that represents me and what im into.

Upon watching "The Jam - Absolute Beginners" there is a a section where Paul Weller is singing while the camera pans around him and it caught my eye, so i wanted to do something with that. I wanted it to look hand rendered but not too jerky and each frame different, so i used my moniter as a light box, and hand drew each possible frame onto layout pad paper. I haven't quite done every frame so far but this is what its going to look like.

The general idea for the 30 pages is to have his face spinning and singing whilst in the background red and blue arrows come from left to right to create stripes in the background which will eventually thin out back to white.

The item that i chose for this project was a hot glue gun. Something that i have used many a time for fixing things. I like the general shape of it and i think it will be pretty interesting to draw.

Heres another pop at the album art idea but this time making The Who - Quadrophenia. Tried keeping this simple i want it to style have that psyche font but i want it to look more like a big logo on the front.

This was the initial idea that i had, the font style is quite groovy and buldges out on the points, I wanted to use this alongside the the slim but tall quite serious font so it gives it contrast and isnt just one dimentional. The pertruding lines were an idea i had to make a sort of union jack style background, as alot of the who branding does. Im not too sure about this though.

Fresh start

I have decided against my first idea and came up with a new and possibly better idea.

The idea is basically to make my own set of album art and film posters using the 60s psyche inspired style, the full write up will come later. For now here is a few ideas that i have knocked up for one of my old favourite bands "The Cribs"

I wanted to think of an original idea for the front cover of the album that didnt represent the original artwork at all, My initial ideas are all sketched out trying to find out what ideas will come out best. Above was an idea for the disk cover, the mouth is to represent the lead singer of the cribs Ryan Jarman as he was noutorious for splitting his lips mid-set and his face and clothes being covered in blood. Tried to get that sort of psyche style by making it abit OTT and not really that realistic and adding the shouty waves radiating from around it.

I took the first idea and using inspiration from some of the 60s psyche gig posters i created this. There is alot of use of wavy odd lines running throughout it. To make the band name and album title fit in without losing the look i fit the lettering into some of the shaped lines i drew in which i think it turned out pretty well. The type is all hand drawn using the groovy psyche style fonts that i have been looking at.I want my work to looking true in the psyche style, but i want to experiment with it aswell so i took to hand drawing the face of the singer, I intend to use this delicate but messy scribbled face onto some solid block colour to get a contrast in look and texture. Some of the drawing didnt turn out so well so i intend to edit bits out when i get round to using it in the computer stages.

Some more ideas to fit alongside the face idea previously. As the character is smoking a cigarette I thought it might be a good idea to use the patterns and type coming out the end of the cigarrette like smoke. Another way i can put in the bands name and album title. The image on the left is also another disk pattern idea. The band hail from Wakefield in which they are pretty proud of and alot of the time the come out to a crowd chanting "Wakefield, wakefield.." so i tried a spiral effect using this chanting coming from small to large. Could do with re-drawing this, some letters dont really look right.

Theres more to come yet, this is just a base idea.

Proposal

When i read the brief i knew that i would struggle coming up with a concept and narrative, im not very good being left to do my own thing as there is a lack of structure for me to follow. Naturally the first thing that i thought about was the things that i am interested in, being the mod scene and britain and all that lark. This feels like a too obvious choice for an fmp though, i've done alot of work and things based on this anyway so that choice has gone out of the window.
I rewatched the classic film "The warriors" over this gap in the holiday aswell, and i realised how obsessed i used to be. I had also stumbled across some work on a blog in which the person had the idea of making novel versions of famous films and i just noticed that the warriors is actually one of them.

Anyway, I think i've found the idea that i want to stick with, so here it is.

a_ The concept is "family life" and what its like for me living at home, being around my family. Looking into my home and its furnishings and the personality of my siblings.

b_ I was looking around for inspiration for things to base my fmp on, considering i dont really lead an interesting life and i havent really been out and about all that much i hadnt saw anything that caught my eye. The internet wasnt really throwing up much either. This idea just came to me as i was lounging around my parents hench new caravan with them.

c_ I want to make a sort of little zine that illustrates all the aspects that i've said in the above. I intend to use different media like have set photography pages and then graphic representation pages. I want to make a little video to go alongside it, im thinking of something quite simple like having recordings from my everyday life around my house and chopping them up quickly so it sort of flickers.

An idea i had for my final end of year show piece was to make a sort of mock set, like a living room. Having an armchair and a lamshade and other such furnishings. I want to have an oldish 90s style tv with my animation playing looped on it. and i want some picture frames for the wall in which i will put some of the artwork from my zine inside.

d_ Everything that is put into the zine/animation will all be either photographed, made or drawn by me. I want it to look really "homey" looking. The spreads will most likely be made/edited in illustrator and photoshop and then finalised in in-design. I will want to print a few of these zines properly on a press so it has that proper finished feel and look to it. At the moment im unsure how i want the animation to look. Im pretty sure that its going to be recordings and then made and edited in after effects.

e_ Im unsure about the costings at the moment, i needto see how much having a little zine printed would cost me. All the artwork and creating of the work will obviously be done by me so thats free. For my end of year show idea i really dont think it will cost all that much, I should be able to pick up the pieces that i want relitively cheap, I dont want brand new modern looking things for this as it wont go with the look that i am going for, I will be looking around on ebay and charity shops for certain things and probably be able to borrow the rest from home.

f_ I think that this is a worthy concept as it is something that is relitive and meaningfull to me and I will be able to meaning behind the pieces. It is a route that i wouldnt usually go down and i think it will hold new challenges for me to create appropriate artwork. I dont think it is something that alot of people will think about and will come out uniquely interesting.
